Abronhill to Palacerigg Country Park - Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Study

North Lanarkshire Council is continuing its ambitious five-year masterplan for Palacerigg Country Park.
As part of this initiative, the council, in collaboration with the local community, is exploring ways to improve access to the park from the Abronhill area by foot and by bike as well as making the park more accessible for the whole community. Recent feedback from visitors indicates that the current connections are not user-friendly for those traveling by means other than car.
To address this, we are conducting a feasibility study to identify opportunities for improving these connections. Gathering input from the Abronhill community and surrounding areas is vital to the success of this study.
Access to high-quality greenspace has been shown to positively impact both mental and physical well-being and can also help reduce health inequalities. Ensuring the community can easily access the park is a key goal of this project, and your ideas and opinions are crucial.
What Type of Infrastructure Could Be Implemented?
For active travel to become a more common and practical form of transport, appropriate infrastructure is essential. This will provide safe, convenient, and direct routes to the park. Potential infrastructure improvements include traffic-free paths and shared-use paths, either upgraded or newly constructed.
A traffic-free path, one of the most sought-after forms of active travel infrastructure, offers users a route separated from traffic and the road network. The key benefit of these paths is a safe, scenic environment with no traffic conflicts

Road Safety
The proposed route aims to connect the community of Abronhill to Palacerigg Country Park, which will require careful consideration of road safety measures. One key area of focus is the ongoing housing development in the Mid Forest area, which presents an opportunity to improve the existing underpass under Forest Road.
As part of this study, we will coordinate with North Lanarkshire Council's roads team and the housing developers. Initial investigations have identified Forest Road as a potential barrier for the Abronhill community in accessing the park. Addressing this will be crucial in ensuring safe and accessible routes for all.
