Huntingdonshire District Council is exploring opportunities to enhance active travel facilities.

By promoting walking, wheeling, and cycling, particularly for shorter journeys, we aim to reduce congestion on our already busy road network, improve air quality, and create safer, more enjoyable environments for living, working, and conducting business.

Approach to Active Travel Document

To support this, the council is preparing an "Approach to Active Travel" document. This document will explore opportunities to improve active travel infrastructure and supporting facilities, aiming to encourage residents and visitors to consider walking, cycling, and wheeling for everyday journeys.

The Approach to Active Travel document outlines a vision for active travel in the district, reflecting the aspiration to develop a more inclusive and accessible network that contributes to sustainable living in Huntingdonshire.

Huntingdonshire District Council Vision

"The council aims to support active travel across Huntingdonshire by encouraging safe, well-connected walking and cycling routes that enable residents, businesses, and visitors to choose more sustainable journeys. By promoting active travel for everyday activities, the district seeks to enhance community vitality, support economic growth, and contribute to improved health and well-being. This approach aligns with broader sustainability goals, helping to create a cleaner, greener future and a better quality of life for current and future generations."

Huntingdonshire District Council’s role in the Active Travel project will vary based on the needs of the community and specific circumstances. The council can take direct action, as well as enable and influence others to contribute to the development of active travel infrastructure.

As an Enabler HDC will:

• Offer guidance and share information with Towns, Parishes, and Community Groups on available funding opportunities for active travel initiatives.
• Advocate for collaboration with regional transport authorities and other stakeholders to improve integration between walking, wheeling, cycling, and public transport hubs.
• Support community engagement efforts to better understand barriers to active travel and explore opportunities for more inclusive infrastructure design.

As an Influencer HDC will:

• Support the case for improved active travel infrastructure, with a focus on safer routes and better connections to schools, town and village centres, and employment hubs.
• Engage with regional and national authorities to highlight the active travel needs of Huntingdonshire’s rural and underserved areas.
• Encourage initiatives that help reduce reliance on motorised vehicles by promoting incentives and activities that support active travel choices.

As a Doer HDC will:

• Support active travel improvements that enhance safety and accessibility, such as segregated cycle paths, safer routes to employment and education, and designated School Streets, where feasible.
• Seek to develop and maintain accessible and user-friendly active travel routes that contribute to physical and mental well-being in local communities.
• Explore opportunities to utilise available internal and external funding to support targeted active travel projects that may benefit the local economy and community connectivity.
• Monitor and review active travel initiatives where possible, considering perceived barriers and levels of active travel adoption across the district.

Cambridgeshire Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan

A crucial part of the Approach to Active Travel document is the integration with the Cambridgeshire Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which was produced by Cambridgeshire County Council and approved in October 2022. The LCWIP is a strategy designed to improve walking and cycling routes across the Cambridgeshire county. It helps identify where new paths, crossings, and other infrastructure are needed to make it safer, easier, and more enjoyable for people to walk, cycle, or wheel for their everyday journeys.

The plan focuses on creating well-connected networks that link homes, schools, workplaces, shops, and leisure spaces, making walking and cycling realistic options for more people. An LCWIP aims to reduce traffic, improve air quality, support healthier lifestyles, and create better places to live and work.
