Welcome to the Phase 2 public consultation for the Arun Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP).

Arun District Council, working in partnership with West Sussex County Council, has developed a draft LCWIP to help improve walking, wheeling and cycling across the district. The draft plan sets out a long-term vision for creating a safer, more connected and more accessible active travel network linking Arun's towns, villages, neighbourhoods and key destinations.

The LCWIP identifies proposed walking and cycling routes together with areas where future improvements could help make everyday journeys easier, safer and more attractive. It will also provide an important evidence base to support future funding bids and help guide investment as opportunities become available.

What You Told Us During Phase 1

The first phase of consultation helped us understand how people currently travel around Arun, the challenges they experience and where improvements are most needed. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views.

Some of the key findings included:

• 859 people shared their views;
• Traffic speed and volume are the biggest barriers to active travel;
• Walking is already part of everyday life for many residents;
• People want safer, more connected cycling routes;
• Better crossings and improved route continuity are key priorities;
• Your feedback has helped shape the draft walking and cycling networks.

How the Draft LCWIP Has Been Developed

Since the first consultation, we have undertaken a comprehensive programme of technical work to develop the draft LCWIP. This has included:

• Developing a clear vision and objectives for active travel across Arun.
• Reviewing demographic information, travel patterns, health data, collision records and planned growth.
• Identifying key destinations including schools, rail stations, town centres, employment areas and visitor attractions.
• Defining Core Walking Zones together with primary and secondary walking routes.
• Developing primary, secondary and local cycling networks.
• Assessing and prioritising routes using a consistent evidence-led assessment framework.
• Producing a long-term programme of improvements to support future investment.

Understanding the Networks

The proposed network has been developed using a simple hierarchy to identify the role each route plays within the wider active travel network.

Walking Network

Core Walking Zones (hatched purple areas) identify the areas where the greatest levels of pedestrian activity occur, including town and village centres, schools, rail stations, shopping areas and other important destinations.

Primary Walking Routes (dark red thick lines) connect Arun's most important destinations, providing the principal walking and wheeling corridors.

Secondary Walking Routes (brown thick lines) connect neighbourhoods, residential areas and local centres to the wider walking network.

Cycling Network

Primary Cycling Routes (red lines) form the strategic backbone of the network, connecting Arun's main towns, employment areas, rail stations and other key destinations.

Secondary Cycling Routes (amber lines) connect communities and local centres to the primary network and improve links between settlements.

Local Cycling Routes (blue lines) provide local connections within towns and villages, helping people travel safely between neighbourhoods, schools, parks, shops and public transport.

This consultation provides an opportunity to review the draft networks before the LCWIP is finalised.

We would like to know whether we have identified the right routes, whether there are important connections that are missing, and whether there are local issues or opportunities we should consider before the final document is prepared.

An LCWIP is not a detailed engineering design or a commitment to deliver individual schemes. Instead, it provides a long-term evidence base that helps guide future investment and supports funding bids as opportunities become available.
